A groundwater survey studies subsurface layers to suggest where water-bearing fractures are most likely. Geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity give a depth profile before you commit to drilling.
On large plots, farms and industrial sites, the survey cost is small compared with the cost of one dry bore. On small residential plots there may be only one or two feasible points anyway.
A survey improves the odds; it cannot guarantee water. Treat any provider promising certain results with caution.
Providers listed under Groundwater Survey publish the methods they use and the areas they cover.
